Pat Curren, Waimea Bay, January 1960, with Byron Keough & Peter Cole in the falls, unseen. A black and white, 30″ x 20″ print hand-signed by photographer and writer John C. Elwell, ©1960 John Elwell Collection. This wave was called the biggest wave ever photographed to the date it was taken. This is a sequence of two, with a hand rapid advance Canon camera. Byron Keough and Peter Cole took off with Pat Curren and went down over the falls, with Pat barely making it by a whisker. Pat said this was one of a half dozen big rides like this in his career, with one that was bigger. He said one almost killed him on the shoulder, and that he got a gulp of air under the water from an air boil, that he cannot explain today.
The print was made with HP Vivera ink and Photo Satin RC paper combining to create an image that is fade resistant for more than 250 years as compared to a LightJet image on silver-halide photo paper having a longevity of 40 years, at best. It is laminated with a Satin overlaminate which allows for the blacks tones to stay very dense while being able to view the print from almost any angle without reflection or glare. Additionally, because of the Satin overlaminate protection and durability the print can be framed with or without glass. It is mounted on 1/8″ white Sintra, a plastic material made of “expanded” PVC that is very durable, ready to be framed quickly and easily by metal frame or more custom framing.
